POOL RENOVATIONS

Old swimming pools may begin to look tired and worn out, as well as lacking efficiency. However the general structure and excavation can provide a suitable foundation for a renovation.

Although it can seem tempting to hang onto your existing pool as it is, renovating an older swimming pool can have numerous benefits and advantages.

The health of our customers will always remain our number 1 priority at A+ Pools, and many are unaware of the health impacts associated with an old swimming pool. As pool plaster breaks down, small particles contaminate the water supply, with can have negative effects on the health of those using the swimming pool. By re-plastering your swimming pool every 15-20 years you can give your old pool a fresh make over as well as protecting the health and safety of you and your family.

As well as the important health factors involved in renovating an old swimming pool, it can transform the aesthetics of the swimming pool and the landscape around it. A pool renovation can add value to your property, as well as give your outside entertainment area a fresh facelift to last for years to come.

COPINGS & pool SURROUNDS

Pool coping is the cap that frames your swimming pool, and ties into the pool’s surrounding surface. Choosing the right look takes careful consideration because it is a key design element with lots of options to choose from.

Popular options include cut stone, wooden decking, concrete and clay coping.

CUT STONE

Cut stone, such as travertine, natural split sandstone and flamed granite are ideal for copings and surround patios because they are durable, offer a wide range of colour and size choices, and have a feel that is soft underfoot and doesn’t overheat in the sun.

CONCRETE

Concrete as a pool surround offers clean lines with few joins, Ideal for big pool surrounds, concrete is well matched to minimalist and modern homes.

WATERLINE

Tiles along the water’s edge of a pool draws the eye and instantly elevates the look. This simple trick in creating a designer feel can be applied to any waterline, such as elevated spas, infinity edges, raised bond beam (pool walls) above the water surface.

More than enhancing the aesthetics of your pool, tiles along the water’s edge protect your liquid investment. The material provides two key functional roles critical to a pool’s longevity and maintenance.

Pool plaster

Gone are the days of plaster only being available in white. Today’s plastering companies are offering not only coloured additives, but coloured aggregates which add visual interest, greater durability and full design cohesion with the rest of your home and landscaping.

Pool plaster can last for many years. Typically a pool’s original plaster or a freshly replastered surface will last 7-12 years before it starts to show its age due to the erosive effects of water and chemicals that begin to degrade the surface. The surface of plastered pools will eventually become rough, and stains will become more difficult to remove.

White Marble plaster is a cost effective plaster option. Marble has been around a very long time and is used on thousands of pools. It’s white appearance makes the colour of the water look sky blue.

Fully tiled

Tiles are often applied to the pool’s waterline, floor, or steps to provide a colourful accent. BUT they can also be used to finish the total interior surfaces of a pool. The longest lasting solution available, a fully tiled pool looks fantastic. The glossy appearance of a tiled interior makes the most of water’s reflective properties. Tiled interiors are admired for their durability, their artistic & individual look and for the undoubted glamour that they convey.

Though tiles are the most expensive of the pool interior finishes and though they take longer to install than plaster and aggregate finishes, a fully tiled interior will last longer than any other pool surface. With good and regular maintenance, tiled interiors can provide a lifetime of 20 years and more.

There are two main categories of pool tiles and some considerations for using each effectively:

GLASS TILES

Vitreous or glass tiles made from pressure-fused glass are becoming increasingly popular for pool construction. The luminous glass tiles come with either a flat surface with an even, transparent color or a rippled surface that creates an iridescent, rainbow effect.

PORCELAIN TILES

If you want something low-maintenance, textured porcelain tiles are a great choice. Porcelain are pre-sealed and provide a smooth, easy-to-clean surface.
